We are excited to share that Vlada’s latest episode has recently been released through PegMedia, making it available to public access television stations. This special episode invites viewers to discover a slightly different way of life—one that was once a natural part of everyday living across many Eastern European communities and that people are still working hard to preserve today.
It is a way of life rooted in a close connection to the earth, strong family bonds, self-sufficiency, and a deep sense of belonging to the communities we call home.
For Vlada, this journey is also a personal one. The episode takes us to her hometown, the place where she was born, where traditions are more than memories. They remain part of everyday life, passed from one generation to the next through food, family, and the simple act of caring for one another.

Rethinking What We Drink: A Healthier Tradition
Our first stop introduces us to Vlada’s sister, Ranka, who is passionate about finding alternatives to commercial soft drinks loaded with artificial additives. Her efforts encourage us to reconsider what we consume and rediscover simpler options inspired by traditional food cultures.
This conversation opens the door to a broader topic: how different cultures approach digestive wellness and gut health through their everyday food choices and long-established culinary traditions.
Sometimes, the answers we are looking for are not necessarily new inventions. They may be found in the knowledge our grandparents practiced long before convenience foods became a regular part of modern life.
A Garden That Feeds a Family All Year
From there, we join Vlada’s sister-in-law, Biljana, in her remarkable garden—a living example of dedication, patience, and self-sufficiency.
Biljana grows the vegetables her family will rely on throughout the entire year. Her garden is filled with potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, peppers, basil, broccoli, and many other vegetables, each contributing to a household built around growing, preparing, and sharing its own food.

Maintaining a garden on this scale requires hard work and planning, but it also brings something invaluable: a direct connection to the land and a greater understanding of where our food comes from.
In a world where so much of what we eat arrives in packages from distant places, Biljana’s garden reminds us of the satisfaction and independence that come from growing food with our own hands.
From the Garden to the Fire: Reviving an Ancient Cooking Tradition
One of the most memorable parts of this episode is our return to a traditional way of preparing a hearty meat-and-vegetable dish known as “such,” cooked under an unber—a traditional covered cooking vessel used to prepare food slowly over heat.
Using vegetables grown in Biljana’s garden and meat from animals raised by the family, fed with grain grown in their own fields, we recreate a cooking tradition that brings together the fruits of the land and the knowledge of generations.

This is more than preparing a meal. It is a reminder of a time when the journey from field to table was direct, when families understood the work behind every ingredient, and when cooking was an expression of resourcefulness, tradition, and togetherness.
The result represents a way of living in which the land provides, the family works together, and food becomes a meaningful connection between people and their heritage.

Building Bridges Through Culture, Not Borders
At the heart of this episode is Vlada’s larger purpose: to open a door to a simpler way of life that many Eastern European countries are working to preserve.
These traditions are worth sharing not because the past was perfect, but because it contains valuable lessons. Growing our own food, staying connected to our families and communities, preparing meals from local ingredients, and respecting the natural world are practices that remain relevant regardless of where we live.
Vlada also hopes to build a bridge of knowledge and experience between cultures whose histories have sometimes placed them on opposite sides of conflict. Not so long ago, east and west were divided by political and historical differences. Today, there is an opportunity to look beyond those divisions, learn from one another, and recognize the traditions and values we share.
Food and family can be powerful starting points. A garden, a traditional recipe, or a conversation around the table can help us discover common ground where we once saw only differences.
By preserving these stories and making them accessible to a wider audience, we can enrich our own lives while helping future generations understand the cultural heritage that shaped their families and communities.
