This summer, Hoofbeats for Hope and Vlada’s Seeds of Life came together to create a garden for children and youth who participate in Hoofbeats for Hope camps and programs. The project brings together two organizations that share a belief in the power of meaningful experiences, hands-on learning, and opportunities for young people to grow.

Nicole, founder of Hoofbeats for Hope, has dedicated her work to providing children and youth with supportive, enriching experiences that help them build confidence, discover new interests, and connect with others.

Vlada Vladić, founder of Vlada’s Seeds of Life, brings her passion for gardening, cooking, education, and hands-on experiences that help young people develop practical skills and a deeper connection to nature and community. Silvia, president of Vlada’s Seeds of Life, shares that vision and helps turn these ideas into meaningful programs and opportunities for children, families, and the broader community.

Together, their shared commitment is creating new possibilities for young people to learn, grow, contribute, and thrive.

Growing More Than Vegetables

The first plants placed in the garden were peppers and eggplant, provided by Vlada’s Seeds of Life, ready for planting.

But the project doesn’t stop there.

Vlada’s Seeds of Life also left a collection of fruit, vegetable, and flower seeds that can be planted throughout the growing season. This gives the youth at Hoofbeats the opportunity to continue returning to the garden, planting new crops, watching them grow, and learning about the different stages of gardening.

Some of the seeds will also be shared with camp participants so they can take them home and plant their own gardens.

This is an important part of the project. The goal isn’t simply to create one garden at Hoofbeats—it is to inspire young people to take the experience home with them.

A child who plants a seed at camp may go home and plant another seed with a parent, grandparent, or sibling. One small garden can become the beginning of another, and then another.

A Garden for Everyone

The garden will serve the children and youth who participate in Hoofbeats for Hope camps and programs, including young people who may have disabilities or face other challenges or difficult circumstances. It will also create opportunities for families, caregivers, volunteers, and others in the Hoofbeats community to participate.

One child may plant a seed. Another may water the plants. Someone else may help care for the garden, observe its progress, harvest vegetables, or help prepare a meal.

Gardening provides a hands-on way to learn responsibility, patience, teamwork, nutrition, and perseverance—while giving young people the satisfaction of seeing something they helped create come to life.

From Garden to Table

When the peppers and eggplant are ready to harvest, the next chapter of the project will begin.

Hoofbeats for Hope and Vlada’s Seeds of Life plan to organize a community dinner and cooking class, bringing children, families, and participants together to celebrate the harvest.

The young gardeners will have an opportunity to see the entire process come full circle—from planting and caring for vegetables to harvesting, cooking, and sharing a meal.

They will also learn how peppers, eggplant, and other garden produce can be incorporated into simple and delicious dishes.

Planting Seeds at Home

Sharing seeds with camp participants is an important part of creating a lasting impact.

When children take seeds home, they take home more than a packet of seeds—they take an opportunity to create something of their own.

They can plant with their families, care for the plants, watch them grow, and eventually harvest something they helped produce.

That experience can create conversations about healthy food, responsibility, nature, and where our food comes from. It can also give families another reason to spend time together.

Looking Toward Future Collaborations

The garden at Hoofbeats for Hope is just the beginning.

Whether through gardening, cooking, outdoor activities, education, or other hands-on experiences, the goal is to continue finding ways to give young people opportunities to learn, contribute, and discover something new.

With care, collaboration, and a little patience, those seeds can grow into food, friendships, skills, confidence, and lasting memories.
